Lost History
Mapes Hotel and Casino-
The Mapes Hotel and Casino opened in December, 1947 and quickly became the premier hotel in Reno during the 1950’s and 1960’s catering to a large number of celebrities. During the filming of The Misfits, Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable stayed at the hotel. The Sky Room at the top of the Mapes was a famous nightclub where a number of great singers and entertainers performed, such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet and Sammy Davis, Jr.
On Super Bowl Sunday, 2000, the Reno landmark was imploded, becoming the first of the '11 Most Endangered' sites to be demolished.
